Cropping at Moor Farm varies from year to year due to the annual rotation planned for the farm.
Winter Wheat (WW) Feed wheat-Welford, class 1 milling-Hereward, class 2 milling-Einstein. Feed wheat is for animal feed and milling wheat is for human consumption both in the UK and abroad. It is stored on the farm and in the grain store at the co operative that we belong to.
Oilseed rape (OSR) The variety grown is Expert for human consumption oil. It is stored in the grain store at the co operative due to the seed size and difficulty of storing it on-farm.
Grassland (Gr) Grass is for both grazing and conservation for winter feed for the cattle and sheep. It is mown, wilted and baled to make silage for winter feed.
Setaside (S) This is land not cropped. It is left fallow to allow ground-nesting birds to breed. It can be sprayed off to kill the weeds after 15th April or cultivated after 1st July in preparation for the next year’s crop.
Field Margins (FM) These are 2m or 6m strips around the outside of fields, near drains or hedges and are drilled with grass to encourage wildlife habitat. They are managed according to the plan.
Sugar Beet (SB) This is grown under contract with British Sugar. It is transported by road to Whissington beet factory, near Kings Lynn. The varieties grown are Cinderella and Mars. This is for human consumption sugar products. Beet is around 16-18% sugar.
Potatoes (P) This crop is grown on our land by a neighbour. It is very important to rotate potatoes to reduce the incidence of disease build-up, therefore they are only grown on the same field for 1 in 5 years. The varieties grown are Fiana for export to Ireland and Maris Piper for chipping. Irrigation is used in the years when there is not enough natural rainfall in the growing season.
